Scottish Widows have chosen the EnviroStart Motor Energy Control as a significant part of their energy savings initiatives to be implemented over all of their UK sites through the course of 2003.So far they have installed across all suitable applications at one Scottish site in order to fully evaluate the product within the context of their office environment. The savings are clearly present with initial measurements indicating a gross reduction in excess of 12% across the site with individual motor applications yielding in excess of 17% on applications as diverse as air conditioning and air handling. All systems are linked into the site BMS PLC which manages the demand and switches the systems as required. The advantages of a system whose control circuit design has been optimised to directly interface with PLC control logic reduces installation time and costs assisting in the provision of an installation with a payback currently estimated to be around 19 months.Concerns were expressed prior to the installation that the EnviroStart may interfere with sensitive control logic within the PLC and may also create hazards for the extensive computer facilities on site. The units have been in place now since February and, as expected, have caused no problems to any peripheral systems. All EnviroStart units are designed to minimise radiated and distributed harmonics and spikes ensuring their easy interface adjacent to or on the same circuit as other more sensitive systems.
